it behooves a maturing technology to look to it's history.
accordingly, i offer the following as a piece of history, for
your edification and possible amusement.
in this list as well as other publications i see numerous
references to "X Windows" and even (gasp) XWin.
the famed Athena project at MIT produced many new ideas in the
world of computing. one of these ideas was a windowing system
for terminals and workstations called "X". (i believe the first
version was X10 , but X11 was the first version to make it out
of the MIT environment.)
there never was such a thing as "X Windows". there was and is
however a windowing system called "X", know and loved (hated) by
us all.
everyone is, of course, free to call it whatever they choose,
but it's just "X", not "X Windows" and certainly not XWin.
X (and Motif) were the model for Microsoft WIndows, so their
influence is very wide indeed.
