Re: Samba & Win98: Trouble

Accessing the Linux box, and making it appear in the Network Neighborhood
are two totally seperate issues.

Start by trying to map a drive to the linux box itself...

First:

Double check what your shares are called by typing

"smbclient -L name"

where "name" is replaced by the name of your local machine as seen at the
eth0 interface.

in my case

"smbclient -L router"

results in:

---
Added interface ip=10.0.0.1 bcast=10.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0
Server time is Thu Oct 1 19:28:07 1998
Timezone is UTC-4.0
Domain=[NETRESULTS] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 1.9.18p7]
security=user

Server=[ROUTER] User=[opjose] Workgroup=[NETRESULTS] Domain=[NETRESULTS]

        Sharename      Type      Comment
        ---------      ----      -------
        admin          Disk      JMS's Service
        homes          Disk      Home Directories
        hp1200c        Printer   lp0
        hp4            Printer   lp
        IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba Server)
        myshare        Disk      Local Linux Directory
        netlogon       Disk      Network Logon Service
        opjose         Disk      Home Directories
        pchome         Disk      PC Directories
        printers       Printer   All Printers
        public         Disk      Public Stuff
        tmp            Disk      Temporary file space

This machine has a browse list:

        Server               Comment
        ---------            -------
        GAMES                Game Computer
        OFFICE               JAS
        ROUTER               Samba Server
        WHOPPER              JMS

This machine has a workgroup list:

        Workgroup            Master
        ---------            -------
    NETRESULTS   ROUTER

---

...after typing in a valid password.

If you cannot get something similiar to the above, you do not yet have samba
properly configured and need to go back to the installation docs...

Next at a Winblows machine

Click on MAP DRIVE (enable the map button) and under PATH: type in

\\router\admin

where \\router is the name of your machine as seen at the eth0 interface and
\admin is a username you have created in samba.

Assuming you correctly installed the patch, your drive will be mapped.

If you have a problem, you might want to run "testparm" at the prompt to
locate what may be amiss... I'ld recommend printing it's output and the
docs, and sitting down and reading with the testparm dump in hand.

You'll quickly locate what is wrong this way...
