When Samba is configured, it has at least 3 ways of doing
authentication.
1. Use the local /etc/password file
Advantage: its the default
Disadvantage: have to keep username/passwords in 2 places.
Disadvantage: requires the client machines to use clear-text
passwords, which are less secure, and not the default on
patched NT and on 98.
2. Store NT-style encrypted passwords on the Samba server,
maintained by handy commands like smbadduser, smbpasswd.
Advantage: can work with unmodified NT,95,98.
Advantage: noes not use insecure cleartext passwords.
Disadvantage: have to keep username/passwords in 2 places.
3. Samba authenticates against an NT domain server,
or another Samba server.
Ie, samba checks the encrypted password from the
user agains the NT or Samba password server.
Advantage: does not use insecure cleartext passwords.
Advantage: username/passwords can be maintained in
just one place.
These features have been available in Samba versions for
at least 2 years.
