Ahh, that was the crux of the original post and the main point of my reply.

(The original questioner was asking why is wasn't possible to create a
workable RedHat cdrom image from files ftp'ed from sunsite onto a windoze
box).
The install image needs to be set up correctly, then the image created -
and it need to be done on a linux box.
I'd be suprised if Easy-CD-Writer can't simply be given a prepared image
file and gracefully burn it onto a cdrom.

Yep, exactly.

Step 2 is not possible if this isn't right. Hehe... I got caught with
genhdlist dumping a core file in the RPMS directory, and it kept doing that
even after I tracked down and fixed the offending i386.rpm. Took me ages
to realise that there was a core file in there that was causing all the
subsequent problems! :-)

I would add:
4. Make sure that the RedHat/instimage/ subdirectories (with the "live"
filesystem" is set up correctly with no corrupt files and valid
symlinks etc. (Been caught with this one too).
