zombie in sendmail

well its obviously getting close to halloween, because i have a zombie in
sendmail. I'm trying to stop sendmail (/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S80sendmail stop)
and its not working. The only possible reason i'm seeing is that i have a
sendmail zombie. so i have two questions: A) do zombies keep sendmail from
stopping, B) how do i kill a zombie? (i've tried kill -9 pid#).
and if zombies do NOT affect sendmail stopping, then what other reasons
could sendmail not be stopping?
any help is greatly appreciated, because i am completely lost. 
(btw, i'm trying to restart sendmail because i added some virtual host
aliases, and i changed sendmail.cw)
