[no subject]

One thing I've noticed: the symptoms change sometimes and won't go back
when I undo something. Currently when I boot I see my hostname echoed.
After I login to the box, the hostname disappears. I've even placed it
in ALL of the config files to see if I could get it to stay around but,
if it's there anywhere, it's hiding from my prying eyes.

I've read and tried so much I'm now doing totally stupid things just to
see what happens.

Does any of this make sense? I'm not sure any more. Guess I need some
sleep so I can bang my head some more tomorrow.

Anybody have a simple step-by-step solution to this? Like 1) Boot Linux
2) login 3) edit /etc/hosts and add.........
