Because 2940's are historically very unstable in Linux.  As a matter of
fact, according to Alan Cox who is working on the stable tree of Linux
kernels, the only thing that is holding up the release of 2.0.36 is the
2940 driver.  Personally, I have used 3 different systems with 3 different
types of 2940's.  Each system doesn't like certain kernels/2940 drivers,
including the stock RH 5.1 kernel.

It's all due to Adaptec requiring a NDA to get programming info for the
card, and Adaptec constantly changing the card (making it a moving
target).  Finally, recently, Adaptec changed their tune, and allowed the
Linux developers to finally get access to programming info to the card.
