init not running rc.sysinit

Hi.

I got a machine in my cluster that only runs rc.sysinit if I press a key
before it enters runlevel 3. If I don't, the machine is unusable because
root is mounted ro and nothing else is mounted.

I did upgrade to the latest sysvinit package and all files appear identical
(including lilo.conf) to those of other perfectly working machines.

Any clues?
