Follow up: Steven Filling, a kind soul, sent me a copy of his inetd.conf.
Mine looks like his but I still have "delayed initialization of eth0" on
bootup and my dmesg says "IP forwarding off".
I have kernel v34 vice v35 but this was working awhile ago.
Typing ifconfig eth0 my_ip_addr my_netmask up gives this error:
SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: Operation not supported by device
As I noted earlier, I can get my NIC to run on an NT boot disk ...
Other suggestions?
