Just a thought. If you are doing this because you truly are not using a
large block of addresses ( versus from a pool used for dynamic assignment),
point them all to a little 386 or something that just answers pings. When
you need the address, just change the DNS entry for that IP.
I don't know how hard it would be to switch freed dynamically assigned IPs
between the ping box and new connections.
