The reason I'm looking for this is that I have customers with large modem
pools and when my upstream provide tries to ping these addresses at 3 in the
morning they do not answer. So the script or program must know the status of
the IP address prior to answering the ICMP request or letting it past to the
host. This obviously must be very dynamic so putting the IP addresses on a
physical interface is not a possiblility.
