checked all FAQs but still have xemacs, HTML, sytax highlighting issues

I use Redhat 5.1 and xemacs 20.4.

I do a lot of coding in xemacs, and have customized the faces to my
liking.  When I load a HTML document, though, it changes the
font-lock-variable-face to some horrible shade of red.

How do I change this behavior?  Where is this color change occurring?
