Does anyone have any information on this ATI Rage II  - X config problem?

Following installation instructions (and on-line documentation) I ran
Xconfigurator, selected the appropriate server for my card (Mach64??), and
configured appropriate monitor and mode selections.  Now when I run startx
the system locks up at a blank screen and I am forced to power down to
restart the PC.  The captured output startx file says something about not
enough memory and no valid modes before a fatal error occurs. 

The PC OEM advises that the card is an ATI Charger 4MB AGP with Rage II+
DVD chipset.  Visual inspection of the card show's Rage II C AGP.  I have
found no other specific information on this card with reference to XF86
support.
