Mixer configuration?

Hi all,

I've got an Aztech Nova 16 in my RH5.1 box, which works fine with cat
foobar.au > /dev/audio. However, it sounds terrible when using
rvplayer. How do I enable the mixer? Some of the things I've tried and
the results of a few cat jobs follow...

I've tried using xmixer 2.2 and got these errors:
xmixer: Warning: Can't get a list of
available mixer devices.
xmixer: Warning: Can't get a list of available recording sources.
xmixer: Warning: Can't get a list of stereo mixer devices.
xmixer: Warning: Can't read mixer capabilities.

I also tried xmix-2_1-1 and got these errors:
Error reading mixer recording source: No
such device or address
Invalid recording source!
supported = 0xffff

The man page for xmixer suggests I should have /dev/mixer and what
to do if I don't -- I actually have /dev/mixer and /dev/mixer1. cat
/dev/mixer says Operation not
permitted (I'm logged in as root, though), and cat /dev/mixer1
says Device not configured.
