Yes and no - i lived happily for some moths with 16M RAM and 18M of
swap. If
you use just console applications it should be enough. once you've run X
and
netscape, you'll discover that you dont have enough memory, no matter
how much
RAM you have (well... yeah.. 128<b might be enough :) )

If you want something completly safe and non-destructive, go for swap
file on
one of your partitions. Create one file with dd, makeswap on it and that
swapon
the file. It works good enough.

I don't know if fips works on ext2 partitios - and it doesnt worth the
trouble
of defragmenting it anyway. Why dont you split your windoze partition???
