I have the line /opt/kde/bin/startkde in a file named .Xclients in my home
directory.  I have startx in my .profile.  If memory serves me correctly the
configuration of the .Xclients file was the instructions I got with KDE.  The 
..profile line will start X windows regardless of the window manager.
