3c509-TPO NIC and NFS or ftp install

I'm trying to install linux from my PII to a 386 via an ethernet connection
but I'm having trouble. I'm pretty sure its the card on the 386 thats
not being configured properly (the 3c509-TPO). Is this card supported
with the 3c509 driver and/or do I need to pass any parameters to it?
I either get time out errors or am not able to mount the /RedHat directory.
I have the PII set up as IP 2.2.2.2 and have /RedHat exported
via NFS. Then i set up the target as IP 2.2.2.3. Is there any problem
inherent in this setup?
I've tried setting up the 3c509 card on the PII and it never seems
to work even when I input the IO as 240 (or 240h) and the IRQ as
3. It wont stay active and when I set it up from the control-panel
networking setup utility.
When I shutdown I get an error an error that says "symbol for parameter
io not found"? Anyone know how I can fix that?
TIA,
Al Roberts
