Ray,
thanks for your response. i will pursue hardware compression.
also, when i was talking about mt not returning any info
relevant to compression, i unfortunately omitted the word compression
in the command:
mt -f /dev/nst0 compression
as per the mt man page, this may toggle(?) compression.
