RH5.1 netatalk problems

RH 5.1 
netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.0-5.i386.rpm
using atalkd, afpd, papd

(1) atalkd, papd log messages in /var/log/messages with incorrect time
    they seem to be ahead of the system by 4 hours

(2) afpd: default volume appears in chooser
	  if configured with guest option, can successfully login
 	  if, however, using username and passwd.:
	  Mac error: Server unexpectedly closed the connection (something
		like that)
	  syslog mess.: 
		Sep 16 23:04:28 host_name afpd[9891]: ASIP session:548(1) from 
		xx.xx.xx.xx:2080(2) 
		Sep 16 23:04:28 jeeves afpd[9853]: server_child[1] 9891 
		exited 1
	  my guess is that the cleartxt authentication fails.  but why?  

(3) kernel eth0 times out after 10 minutes or so:
    Sep 17 09:19:01 host_name kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0050 
    command 0000.
    Sep 17 09:19:01 host_name kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the transmitter...
    Sep 17 13:19:06 host_name atalkd[28216]: as_timer gateway 2880.1 down
    it fails to restart the transmitter, and hoses my connection for all 
    services
