The first steps in compiling the kernel are:
make mrproper (cleans out the old stuff)
make config (this is the configuration)
make dep
make clean
make zImage
The second one, make config, will ask you questions one by
one, on what you want in the kernel. One of the first is
the type of processor: 386, 486, Pentium.
If you use menuconfig or xconfig, you are on your own, I never
have used those tools. But surely they ask you...
