You loose, sorry.
It's tricky... I've tried doing this myself and quickly gave up. What I
didn't try is downloading the tar.gz for rpm-2.5.3 and compiling it by hand
- this is probably your only way to solve this particular problem. But it
won't really help (which is why I didn't bother).
RH4.2 is based on libc5, while RH5.x is based on glibc6. Even if you got
the newer rpm utilility compiled and working on your RH4.2 system, its only
use would be for rebuilding src.rpm pages to work on your system... binary
i386.rpm packages won't install nor run on it (not without doing a force
installs and then installing some glibc6 libraries and ld.so loader etc).
Also, be warned that the netscape binary in that rpm is also linked against
glibc6, and won't run on a RH4.2 system for the same reasons.
The real solution is to upgrade your RedHat box to 5.x.
[Any comments, errors, omission or corrections gratefully accepted from
others in redhat-list.... there may indeed be some easy solutions.]
