problem hooking laptop to serial port

When I put the following line in my /etc/inittab file:

S0:3456:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS0 DT9600 vt100

I can connect my laptop to the first serial port and log in.

If I change the line to:

S1:3456:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 DT9600 vt100

I get the following in my messages file every 5 minutes:

Sep 29 18:22:06 serpent init: Id "S1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

And I can't log on from the laptop.  Is there something else I need to 
do?
