Errata not working

I can't get about 80% of the RedHat 5.1 errata to install.

I get a bunch of version conflicts with the older version of whatever I
am installing.  It's a fresh install of 5.1 the only thing I have done
is recompiled the kernel (that didn't really work that great, that's why
I want to install some of the errata).

Some of the errata I've gotten conflicts on is:

initscripts
kernelcfg
gcc

and a bunch of others.

Is there a order I need to install the errata in?  What could be wrong?
