Windowmaker, GNOME and failed deps on old libs? Please help.

Ok I need some advise.

I run WindowMaker and GNOME. I went to install WindowMaker-0.51.2-1.i386.rpm.
To do this I needed libungif-4.1.0-1

I uninstalled (rpm -e) all the gnome packages, upgraded libungif-4.1.0-1, and
then went to reinstall the GNOME packages. I get a failed dep on the old
version of libungif

[root zaragoza inst_gnome]# rpm -ivh --test imlib-1.9.4-1.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
        libungif.so.3 is needed by imlib-1.9.4-1

it is looking for the old version of libungif.

Is there anything short of --force that will make this work? Going to
filewatcher.org, I find imlib-1.9.4-1.i386.rpm is the most recent version of
imlib. Will a new rpm be available that is aware of the new libungif-4.1
library?

How do gurus solve such a Catch-22?

Thanks John
