Re: Accessing Linux from Windows (was Query.)

These are for networks, ie if you have a windows and linux box
connected.

If you have a single dual boot machine and you want to share files then
have a common vfat files partition accessable by both win and linux.
There are win ext2 utilities, I believe, but I would never trust windows
on by linux filesystems, thanks.

As for the network utilities...

I intalled it and it worked (rpm from mandrake leeloo). Still need to
tweak it a little more, but it does what I want it to do - print from
windows. Mind you the windows box is so broken that the other PC boots
linux as well most of the time. I just have the two boxes connected with
10Mbs coax, heaps enough to share files and printer and use NFS to serve
Staroffice/wp8 binaries to the other machine and so forth.

Worked out of the box. Just gotta get the network set up right - I used
linuxconf. A lot :-) Harder to get going in Win and even then it's
broken.

> how do I configure an X server?

Mandrake did it for me last time. But there are various menu driven
utilities that make this easier. The installation manual covers it
better than I could here.

Once you get your head around the concepts it's not too bad. It's the
start that's hard.

I have NFS working now, it seems easy, as does samba and the whole
network thing (well, the basics anyway) but at first it's just hard to
work out just what you _want_ to do... then you have to figure out how
to do it :-)
