Why did you have to uninstall GNOME? You could have just upgraded libungif
and other needed libraries without loosing GNOME functionality...

No, imlib is saying that it needs libungif installed FIRST... you should
have gone ahead and installed libungif... If imlib still complains just
create a symlink from the new version to the file version it is looking for
and everything will be fine.

By the process I just outlined... sometimes to make an older app function
you'll need to make a "soft" link to the file version the app is looking
for.
Let's say that you have /usr/lib/libungif.so.4 but no /usr/lib/libungif.so.3
you could
ln -s /usr/lib/libungif.so.4 /usr/lib/libungif.so.3
and away you go...
