Paul,

Thanx for your suggestion. In general it could prove very helpful, however I already tried the connection succesfully under W98 (on the same machine) before and after the Linux session.

So this is not the solution to my problem.

 I was having some intermittent problems that were similar--it turned out
 that the printer signal cable was loose.  Sometimes we forget to check
 the "obvious".  Also make sure your cable is good.  If you have another
 OS available, e.g. DOS, even on a floppy, try printing with it.  Also 
 some printers have a self-test you can run at power up.  You need to 
 narrow down the list of possible causes of the problem.  It's not
 always software.
