Yes, logon as yourself and su to root. To read email, either logon to
the console or I think 'su - root' will allow you to read root mail.
I don't know if it's wise, but I get around this by setting up an
alias in /etc/aliases so that root's email (as well as some other
keywords like slert and I don't know what else) comes to me.
I happen to be wrestling with qpopper right now and I can tell you
that you would need to edit a header (config.h?) and recompile to
allow root access. Feel like hacking? I wouldn't for security
reasons.
