I don't see anything wrong with your list, I've had good luck with WD
drives but all drives die, I would add a tape backup.  Better would be all
SCSI (i.e., including a SCSI DAT tape unit).  And finally, I like having a
printer available so you'll either want a nic (if you have a network handy)
or a printer (one that works with Linux--I've had my eye on Okidata 6e
prices myself or you could try one of the supported inkjets like the couple
of HP models.)

But, although I wouldn't think of question you motives, I bet the
incremental advantage of building a Linux-compatible system is slight and
unless you've an uncle in the business, I don't think you are likely to get
the parts cheaper than the big manufacturers so I think you're likely to
spend more.  At least, that's been my experience; I'd love to hear about it
if there is a better way!
