syslogd: /dev/lp0: Interrupted system call

My old dot matrix has stopped logging syslog.  It prints a message likethis
to the console: "Operation not supported by printer" and the below messages
are logged.  The printer IS on-line and, although the system always prints
errors about it being off-line, it has always worked.  Any ideas about what
went wrong?
