play sample.au
Because the es1370 & es1371 chips don't support the .au format in
hardware, you can't cat .au files to /dev/audio or /dev/dsp. You need
software (the play command) to make it play them. The mixer (aumix)
should work though. I have an es1370 (very similar to the es1371) and
it doesn't show much of anything in /dev/sndstat, but it still works
with the play command and, more importantly, with Quake2.
If the first paragraph gives you trouble, then look at the file
/var/log/messages for any relevant messages. Also look at the output of
the following command (as root):
dmesg | less
SUGGESTION: Many people (most of them old, crotchety experts :) don't
read HTML formatted messages for one reason or another. You're more
likely to get a (correct) answer to your question by sending it in plain
text only.
Good Luck!

Subject: Integrated sound
Gateway G6-450, apparently has sound integrated into the motherboard, as
there is no physical sound card as such. sndcnf command says it found
an "ES1371" card, but fails, with an error on the order of ".../dev/dsp
does not support...". cat of /dev/sndstat shows file there, but almost
no parameters filled in. Win95 Driver info shows resources of memory
1400 - 143f and IRQ of 11. sndcnf won't let me alter the "I/O port"
addresses when it goes to manual config (it defaults to the "card" it
thinks it found). I have tried various other cards, to no avail. The
Sound HOWTO doesn't seem to address sndcnfg. Anyone have any thoughts?
