 hi,
     I had the same problem and just solved it. Run the
/usr/bin/mouse-test , it shows on which ttyS your system
find mouse and then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config: there is in the
"Pointer" section line

        /dev/mouse   (in the RH 5.1 it works)

replace it with

       /dev/ttyS1,
    
or that ttyS, which mouse-test on your system shows.
