Problems with RH 6.0

I upgraded my RH 5.2 to 6.0 yesterday and compiled a new kernel.
Now I have the following problems:

1. If I compile new kernel with modules enabled - it hangs during boot at
"Finding Modules Dependencies" step
  (the work around that I found was to compile kernel without modules
enabled)

2. I have user (my wife) that did not have password (I removed it by editing
passwd file). Now it would not allow her to 
  to login. I have tried login under her userid too many times and failed
and now it looks like her account is locked, because
 even if I change her password (using root account) I still can not login
under her name. Question - how to unlock her account? How to 
 make userid that does not have password?

3. StarOffice 5.0 would not work - it just prints "Aborted"  to stdout and
quits.

I would appreciate if anyone let me know how to solve those problems.
