fetchmail problems

Scenario:

I have a 470KB mail file which contains 59 messages. When
fetchmail goes to get the mail file (and parse it and whatever it does),
it downloads the entire thing, knowing how big each message is, which is
fine... however... after it gets the mail file, it takes the first message
out, flushes it, and goes to get message two through the same method... it
downloads the entire file just to get the top message.. so I end up with a
mail file that's several MB in size instead of 470KB.

Output when fetchmail is run in normal mode. If you notice... the byte
counts on the messages is fine; however, the dots reflect what is really
happening. That many dots would suggest about a couple hundred KB or there
abouts.

reading message 17 of 59 (2489 bytes)
............................................................
............................................................
............................................................
..........flushed
reading message 18 of 59 (6481 bytes)
............................................................
............................................................
.......flushed

I've done testing with 'mail' and 'pine' and what I have feared.. it true.
Now... is this normal? If so.. then why? If not, then how do I fix this?
