I learnt this trick from the list a while back to help show when something
is mounted or not.
In your case, do the following to set it up
umount /mnt/zip # make sure it's not mounted
rm /mnt/zip/* # remove anything from previous mistakes
touch /mnt/zip/IM_NOT_MOUNTED # create warning file
now whenever you look in that directory, if you see this file then you know
it is not mounted!
Once you mount a disk, this file is hidden.
