second nic card

First of all linux newbie. really newbie. very newbie.
i have installed redhat 6.0 from cd on to my computer.
i have one nic in it. an isa under novell 2000 compatible. irq 5 io 300.
i went to put in a second nic. a netgear pci 10/100. the diag program says
the nic is at io 6000h and irq 11.

when i do a ifconfig it shows only eth0
i tried to add the second nic with ifconfig eth1 io_addr 6000 io irq 11 and
get a device not found.

how do i add this second card. ?
