One technique that I used to use was to add:
hostname localhost.localdomain
to my /etc/ppp/ip-up.local script.
I still do something similar, but since I'm on a cable modem, it's in
rc.local and a few other scripts of mine that I've employed from
time-to-time to deal with bringing the interface down and back up.
