Slow repeat in xterm

I recently compiled and installed an updated version of
XFree86.  Since installing, I notice that if I hold a
key in an xterm, the repeat rate is slow.  More importantly
to me is that things like backspacing or moving via 
arrow keys in an xterm is slow now rather than the previous
fast rate I would get before.  How do I increase the 
repeat rate, etc, for xterm sessions?  

It is a royal pain to backspace so slowly thru a line
of text in an xterm...
