icon on desktop

Hello All,
You people just amaze me with your knowledge! You'll have to dumb down
for me. My question is how do I put an icon on my desktop for anything I
want a "shortcut" for? Mainly for Sun office 5.1 that came with RH6.1.
Thanks for your help. 
I promise my questions will get harder.
