There's a difference between what you need to know to use and administer
Linux, and what you need to know to program.

Two good books are "Running Linux" by Welsh and Kaufman and "Linux
Network Servers" by Craig Hunt.  "Linux in a Nutshell" is also good, but
somewhat cryptic for a beginner.  There aren't enough simple examples
for somebody without much experience.

In order to progam applications, you need to know some programming
language such as C or C++.  The original Kernigan and Ritchie(sp?)
"white book" on C ("The C Programming Language"?) is an excellent
resource.  "C Primer Plus" from the Waite Group(?) also used to be a
good tool.
