I think you're confusing Linux and X (and window managers). Under Windows,
there is no choice of windowing environment. Under Linux, you can choose
and I would choose one that works well for you. I like GNOME but I always
use it on a machine with a lot of RAM.
Linux without a GUI will run faster than any GUI OS on the same hardware
and you can browse web sites (somewhat) with lynx.
I suppose it has its adherents but I agree with Netscape founder Jim Clark
that Netscape is not the world's best browser. There will be other options
shortly although you may need to pay for them.
