rid myself of <AD> in man pages

This is a tiny annoyance but I thought I might learn something. Starting
with RH 6 or 6.1, instead of hyphens in man pages I get a black 4-character
box containing <AD>. The man man page claims I can set LESSCHARSET=latin1
to fix this but it doesn't. Viewing the man page for iso_8859_1 seems to
suggest that these synbols just aren't supported by the terminal. I'm
using a vt100 emulator. Is there anything that I can/should change in Linux?
