Can't open window as root

In a terminal window, I've su'd to root, exported by DISPLAY variable, but
I still get the following error:

	Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
	Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

It *used* to work. How do I open a window as root from a mortal X session?
