FTP connection lags

I've been running wu-ftpd on RedHat 6.1, and for the last few weeks, there's
one heck of a lag when connecting and logging into my Linux server.  It used to
be quite quick, and useage on my box hasn't increased all that much.  Haven't
messed with the config file though.  How can I speed up the response so it
doesn't lag after a user connects?
