opening an X Window

Hello,

I installed RH Linux 5.0 on my PC. However, startx can not find a display
of depth 8 (This is the error message I get). I do not have the DISPLAY
variable set in my environment as well. So, I do not have any X windows
yet. 

What is going wrong ?
