[OT] q on cross-compilers

Hello,

could anybody please explain just in a few words the idea of cross
compilers? The main question I'd like somebody to answer is how this cross
compiler links against the shared libraries, or it produces a static
binary? The shared libraries used in Linux and e.g. in Solaris are
different, so I wonder how Linux compiler can produce a code for Solaris?
