This is just a guess, Russ, but since sat. nights are pretty
slow on the list, I thought I'd give it a stab.  It sounds
like your kernel might not know where your boot partition
is.  Try

rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hda1

where the first arg is the device which contains your kernel
image and the 2nd argument is the device that contains your
linux root partition '/'
