Ping problem?? please help!

I am having a networking issue with RH 5.2 on a
Sparcstation5

I get this message at bootup:
SIOCADDRT: Invalid Argument
Using DHCP for eth0: Carrier Lost, trying TPE ... done.

I don't know if that is related... but my problem is that I
cannot ping anything.  it just sits there and does nothing
until i ^C it.  I can however, access the web through
netscape and FTP!  so I am really confused.  I read the DHCP
and networking HOWTOs already.  I feel my settings are
correct.

what is SIOCADDRT and TPE??
