I did something very similar to this last night and it killed Win98.
Instead of the way you are telling to me change lilo.conf I changed it
to boot=/dev/hda1. Is the problem that I don't want the hda1, but
instead hda, without the 1. When I put boot=/dev/hda1 when I rebooted
the computer lilo prompted "boot:" I could type linux and it would run,
but if I typed win nothing would happen and I would get the "boot:"
prompt again.
