Screen blinks after exiting XFree86

Running RedHat 5.2 w/2.2.1 kernel:

As soon as I end my XFree86 session and return to the command line, my screen starts blinking.  Everything is OK before I use startx to get into X, and everything is OK during the X session, but upon exit the blinking behavior starts.

Commands are still accepted and processed correctly when I get into this blink mode, but the only command I use at that point is "shutdown -r now" since it's pretty hard to concentrate!

Any ideas?
